High Holy Days 5785 | 2024

At this year’s High Holy Day services there will be many opportunities for us to pray together as a community and with our families. Services will be held on-site at Temple Emanuel and at nearby Kensington Cabin Park. Many will also be available for Live Streaming for those unable to attend in person.

Current Members: All current Temple Emanuel adult members in good standing will be mailed tickets and sent links to Live Streamed services. Members must still register by September 27  to reserve childcare, to purchase prayer books, or include names in the Book of Remembrance. If you have any questions on your membership status, please contact Dianne Neiman.

Not a current TE member? We would love to have you join us for the High Holy Days! We offer a variety of services and programs, including some specifically geared for families and young children. Tickets are required for the evening services on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre and the morning Sanctuary services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Tickets are not required, but we request registration for the children and family services.  Registration required to attend the ticketed services. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director Dianne Neiman.

“Every Jew is a Letter”: Telling Our Story and Being Our Story
“Every Jew is a letter,” the Baal Shem Tov said. “Each Jewish family is a word, every Jewish community a sentence, and the Jewish people at any one time are a paragraph. The Jewish people through time constitute a story.”
What it is about Judaism that has enabled it to last thousands of years and have such an astonishing influence not just on the Jewish people but on all of Western culture and history? Let’s talk about where we fit in the Jewish story and what it says about giving our lives purpose and meaning.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Prayer Books
Temple Emanuel uses the Reform Movement Machzorim – High Holy Day Prayer Books. This includes separate volumes for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with updated translations, full transliteration, rich commentary and a beautiful selection of poetry. Temple Emanuel does not provide High Holy Day Prayer Books. We encourage you to purchase one set per household adult.

Book of Remembrance
We recall the memories of the departed at the Yizkor (Memorial) Service held on the afternoon of Yom Kippur. The annual Temple Emanuel Book of Remembrance contains the names of members’ relatives and friends whose memory we wish to honor. If you are a current Temple Emanuel member and wish to add names to the Book of Remembrance, please send your submissions online or via hard copy. (Deadline September 27)

Parking
Please allow ample time for parking. Auxiliary parking may be available some days at local churches; details will be confirmed with the ticket mailing. Please respect any “No Parking” signs and do not park where spaces have been blocked.

Donation Drive For Manna Food Center
Each year on the High Holidays, Temple Emanuel collects food for the Manna Food Center. Food insecurity is a continuing and serious problem in Montgomery County. Last year we collected over 4000 pounds of food. The food we donated only lasted a few weeks because the need is so great. We will be handing out bags at Rosh Hashanah services. Please take them home and fill them with nonperishable food items and return them on Yom Kippur morning. For those that park in the Warner lot across Connecticut, look for the Kines’ truck to drop of your items. The Manna truck will be in the Temple parking lot before, during and after the morning service. We will have volunteers available to help unload your car. We hope we can count on your support again this year.

Gift of Life Marrow Donor Registry Drive
On Yom Kippur (Saturday October 12), we will host a drive for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry. Their mission is to cure blood cancer through cellular therapy. They are a national non-profit registry facilitating transplants for patients in the United States and abroad. To be eligible donors must be between 18 and 60 and in good health. Donors under 35 are especially encouraged to participate. There is a suggested donation of $60 to be made after the Yom Kippur holiday. A cheek swab will be taken from each potential donor. If in the future you are a lifesaving match for a patient in need, you may be called to donate stem cells or bone marrow. Volunteers will be staffing tables from 8:30-10:00am at the KESTY family service (held in Kensington Cabin Park, weather permitting) and after the Main Service, approximately 12:30-4:00pm at Temple Emanuel.
