Religious School

Our Philosophy

Temple Emanuel’s Religious School (TERS) focuses on three central Jewish values: Community (Kehilla), Learning (Limmud), and Spirit/Identity (Ruach). Throughout the year, we bring these values to life through fun activities like interactive lessons, family events, field trips, celebrating holidays, prayers (tefilla), arts and crafts, movement, and play. Every activity we do connects at least two of these core values.

Kehilla (קְהִלָּה, pronounced kuh-hee-lah) means “community.” At TERS, we focus on building a strong community among our students and families. We pray together in our family services, learn together in our school classes, and have fun together at our youth group events. TERS students also learn about being part of a bigger community that spans across time and places.

Limmud (לִמּוּד, pronounced lee-mood) means “learning” or “study.” It’s about lifelong education, passing down our heritage, having open conversations, and being active in the wider Jewish community. Our learning happens with our clergy, teachers, students, parents, and family members. We believe in learning that connects knowledge to our everyday lives and actions.

Ruach (רוּחַ, pronounced roo-ach) can mean “wind,” “breath,” or “spirit.” It’s about Jewish identity being a vibrant part of who we are every day. Whether we’re at temple, playing sports, or sharing meals with loved ones, our Jewish spirit is always with us. Ruach is what makes our knowledge of Judaism come alive through our experiences.

At TERS, we uphold these values with a deep commitment to inclusion for every member of our learning community. We recognize and celebrate the diverse talents and perspectives that each learner brings to our program. Led by our Director of Learning Inclusion and supported by our dedicated staff, we strive to cultivate a school environment that is safe, accepting, and supportive for all.

At TERS, we’re not just learning about Jewish values – we’re living them, every day. Come join us and see how exciting and meaningful Jewish education can be!
